The Surface-to-Atmosphere GHG Fluxes in Rewetted and Permanently Flooded Former Peat Extraction Areas Compared to Pristine Peatland in Hemiboreal Latvia

When it comes to greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction, the role of water tables in former peat extraction areas has received considerable interest recent decades. This study analysed carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) surface-to-atmosphere fluxes from a rewetted permanently flooded comparison pristine peatland hemiboreal Latvia. Measurements GHG combined sampling using closed-chamber (opaque) method with chromatography detection method. Among studied land-use types, highest annualised CO2 (soil heterotrophic autotrophic respiration) were recorded restored vegetation undisturbed (4.10 ± 0.21 3.45 t CO2-C ha−1 yr−1, respectively), lowest (0.55 0.05 yr−1); temperature groundwater level found be significant influencing factors. The CH4 (562.4 155.8 kg CH4-C yr−1), followed by about two-fold ~20-fold smaller areas, respectively. N2O negligible all (0.66 0.41 N2O-N yr−1).
